Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 1, 2026

SubGuard ("we", "our", or "the extension") is a Chrome browser extension developed by AZULTA that helps users track subscriptions and free trials. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data SubGuard accesses, how it is used, and your rights.

1. Data Collection and Storage

SubGuard stores your subscription data, settings, and preferences locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage API (chrome.storage.local). No personal data is collected, transmitted to, or stored on any external server. SubGuard has no backend infrastructure, no databases, and no cloud services.

2. Browsing History Access

When you choose to run a history scan during the onboarding wizard, SubGuard searches your local browsing history for visits to known subscription service websites (e.g., Netflix, Spotify, Adobe). This scan:

  • Runs entirely within your browser
  • Only matches URLs against a local database of known subscription services
  • Does not transmit, log, or store any browsing history data externally
  • Is a one-time, user-initiated action (not continuous monitoring)

3. Content Script (Page Detection)

SubGuard runs a passive content script on web pages you visit to detect subscription-related checkout and billing pages. This detection:

  • Uses local pattern matching against a built-in database of known subscription domains
  • Analyzes page signals such as URL paths, button text, and price patterns
  • Does not collect, store, or transmit any page content externally
  • Does not read or access your passwords, form inputs, or payment information
  • Can be disabled in the extension settings

4. Gmail Access (Optional)

If you choose to connect a Google account, SubGuard requests read-only access to your Gmail to search for subscription-related emails. SubGuard's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

What we access:

  • Email headers (sender address, subject line, and date)
  • Email snippets — short previews of approximately 200 characters provided by Gmail's API, used to extract subscription pricing information (e.g., "$9.99/month")
  • Only emails matching subscription-related search queries (e.g., "subscription confirmation", "billing receipt", "renewal", "payment receipt")

SubGuard does not download or read full email bodies. Gmail's API provides a short snippet (preview text) alongside email metadata, and SubGuard uses this snippet solely to identify subscription prices and billing cycles.

What we never do:

  • Download or read full email body content or attachments
  • Modify, send, or delete any emails
  • Store raw email data beyond the current scanning session
  • Transmit any email data to any external server
  • Share email data with any third party

Disconnecting:

You can disconnect your Google account at any time from the extension settings. This revokes SubGuard's access token and removes the account from the extension. You can also revoke access from your Google Account permissions page.

5. Notifications

SubGuard uses Chrome's notification API to send you local browser notifications about upcoming subscription renewals and expiring free trials. These notifications are generated and delivered entirely within your browser. No notification data is sent externally.

6. Third-Party Sharing

SubGuard does not share any user data with third parties. There are no analytics services, advertising networks, tracking pixels, or external APIs involved. SubGuard makes no network requests except when you explicitly connect a Gmail account (in which case it communicates only with Google's Gmail API using your authorized OAuth token).

7. Data Security

All subscription data is stored locally using Chrome's encrypted storage. Gmail OAuth tokens are managed by Chrome's built-in identity API and are not accessible to external services. SubGuard does not store passwords, financial credentials, or sensitive personal information.

8. Children's Privacy

SubGuard is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Data Deletion

You can delete all SubGuard data at any time by:

  • Uninstalling the extension (removes all stored data)
  • Clearing extension storage through your browser settings
  • Disconnecting Gmail accounts from the extension settings

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
